Pharmacy Residencies

November 15, 2010

Do you think ASHP-accredited pharmacy residencies should be required for new pharmacy graduates entering hospital and health-systems pharmacy practice? If so, how do you anticipate hospitals and health care systems will meet the demand to train PGY1s and PGY2s? On the other end of the spectrum where will the jobs come from for pharmacists coming out of these residencies?

Although it is a good idea, I don’t think that ASHP-accredited pharmacy residencies should be made a requirement for new pharmacy graduates entering hospital pharmacy practice until more residencies are made available. As a recent new grad, I applied to 13 residency programs total, interviewed at 5, and was lucky to get a position. It is extremely competitive now, even without the requirement, as there are very few hospital jobs available that will hire pharmacists without a few years of prior hospital practice experience (or the equivalent of a residency). I really hope that more hospitals and health care systems will meet the demand to train PGY1s and PGY2s. Where will the jobs come from for pharmacists coming out of residencies? I have yet to find that out. Hopefully I will find something in MA- if not I will move to whatever state has openings.
